YDG Newsletter - 07/13/2010
I'm back! Did you miss me? I apologize for missing last week's newsletter. Due to some health circumstances, I could not get it out in time.
Speaking of healthcare...I had my first hand experience with trying to get it last week. It's been almost 5 years since I last went to a doctor. With no health insurance offered by my company (and paying on my own not financially feasible) that trip to the ER cost a few grand for the basic bloodwork and tests that were run.

YDG Newsletter - 06/22/2010
NEWS Young, Democrat, and Proud of it!
As mentioned in previous newsletters, I live in a deeply conservative area of GA (and the whole U.S. for that matter). The other day, I'm grocery shopping with friends, and one of them is wearing a t-shirt promoting a Democratic gubernatorial candidate. Lo & behold, a lady stops us because she notices his attire. My friend gives me this look like he's about to be criticized for his liberal beliefs and not sure how to handle it in the produce department of Kroger.

A Tale of 2 GA Cities, One Saturday Afternoon...
On a beautiful Saturday, two different things were happening in two very different areas, at the very same time.
In North GA, the YDs of Hall County officers (who are also core members of the North GA MoveOn Council, held a community forum on Big Corporations in Gainesville. We learned only a little before the forum began, that we would get some coverage from the local paper. Only, instead of the forum, the coverage ended up being on what it's like to be a liberal in a one of the deepest red districts in the nation.
Meanwhile, down in Decatur, numerous volunteers turned out for Jason Carter's campaign for senate. In addition to a rally and picnic, many volunteers, including President Jimmy Carter himself, canvassed the area in support of Jason's campaign. And Decatur, as I've come to learn, is one of the most left-leaning towns not just in GA, but in the country.
photos courtesy of Jason Carter for Senate
The political leanings of the general public in Gainesville and Decatur are polar opposites. So, thank goodness that Democrats exist in both!
We care about GA and our country and all the lives in it. So, whether it's outside on a lovely afternoon, or in an air-conditioned meeting room, GA Dems were at work to make our world a better place. And we should all support each other.
So whatever the level of democratic support in your area, know that differences can be made. As long as you get out and take action. Any passive liberals out there, now is not the time to sit idly by. Come out, come out, wherever you are....
CALL FOR YDG NOMINATIONS! If you are interested in taking a more active role in YDG, or know someone who would be perfect for a role...then make sure to check tomorrow's email for more information from our lovely YDG President, Jane Bradshaw.

A Weekend of PARTY-ing
Meeting me, your first impression, I doubt would be that of a party girl. At least not in the sense that were I someone famous, I would end up on the cover of the latest tabloids. I am however, a bit of a social butterfly.
First, the First Big Democratic Mixer at Manuel's Tavern on Friday night. This event, put on by Atlanta Stonewall Democrats, YDAtl, and Young Dems of Dekalb and other sponsoring Democratic groups was a great success! The place was packed! It was particularly exciting to see so many Young Dems there. Both as supporters and as candidates qualified to run for office! Way to step up there, YDs! Yeah!
Saturday started off with the Hall County Democratic Committee's monthly business meeting in Gainesville. Where, local Young Dems were recognized for recent awards at YDG State Convention. We are very fortunate to work with such a supportive local county party, and encourage all YDs to work with yours as well, if you don't already. We're all in this together, right? 3 new candidates in the area who had qualified and are running for offices in the North GA region. Though new to campaigning, they are active members of the community just wanting to make a difference. I commend them for stepping up to make change in GA.
Next stop, down to Duluth for the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women's Spring Event. The beautifully arranged luncheon was my first GFDW event to attend. Carol Porter, candidate for Lt. Governor, was the keynote speaker and I really enjoyed listening to what she had to say. Saw a few familiar faces, but met many new ones. I left the event feeling even more inspired and empowered than when I got there.
Finished the night atttending the DeKalb Democratic Party 2010 Banquet. A beautiful affair, one of the highlights of the evening was seeing our very own, Tim Cairl, receive the Unsung Democrat of the Year award for all his continuous efforts. An award that is well deserved! Congratulations, Tim!
I share this summary of an exhausting, yet exhilarating whirlwind of events, because even days afterwards, I'm still feeling excited and full of hope for the changes we can make here in Georgia. Each event I attended was sponsored by a different group of people and held in different parts of Georgia. Whether it was the big city or small town, whether focused on county party or highlighting progressive women, the main message was the same:
We are all Democrats. We care about the state of things, locally, statewide, and nationally. We all gathered to support one another and strive for better ways of life.
Strengthened by these experiences, and the people I shared it with, I am proud to be part of this organization. Looks like I'm a Party Girl after all. ;-)
Have a story to share? Pictures from convention or your local chapter's latest YD event? Let me know! Let's get the word out to everyone in GA, that we are Young! We are Democrats! And WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

URGENT: Help Save Georgia Higher Education
Dear Fellow YD,
As you know, the Georgia Legislature is highly considering slashing higher education budgets, putting the current financial burden directly on the backs of Georgia's student population. As Young Democrats, we believe that alternative sources of revenue should be explored prior to making across-the-board cuts that will ultimately damage, not help, the economy.

Congratulations, America! We are on our way to having better health care available! History was made on Sunday, March 21, 2010, when shortly before midnight, the announcement was made that the bill had passed with a little more than the 216 votes it needed.

Young Democrats of Georgia Respond to Young Republicans Chairman
Yesterday, hundreds of supporters of education in Georgia showed up outside the state capitol building to protest further cuts to Georgia's higher education. This group represented all spectrum of Georgia society- some families have been Georgians since the time of Oglethorpe, others have just arrived. Some were rich, some were poor, some were middle class. Some were students, some were educators, some were legislators, some were just Georgians who understand that education is critical to the survival of our state- and yes, while many were Democrats, there were Republicans and Independents in the crowd to show that, despite partisan differences, education is the critical issue facing Georgia in 2010.
In a hastily crafted response to this outpouring of support for education in Georgia, Cameron Fash, the Chairman of the Georgia Young Republicans, attempts to establish the argument for dismantling the University System of Georgia advocated by State Senators Seth Harp, Don Balfour and others. He failed.
We also hope that Mr. Fash, who shows his dislike for publically funded education, doesn't drive on publically funded roads, or attended any publically funded high schools or colleges, or ever attended any events in publically funded arenas, etc. You see, what Mr. Fash and others fail to realize is that just because it's funded by the public doesn't make it evil.
The HOPE Scholarship does not cover the full cost of college. While it is an asset and benefit of the state, its perpetual funding is in jeopardy, and therefore failing to meet the goals that it was established for. College tuition is not cheap; many Georgians work late-night jobs, take out student loans, and so forth in order to pay for their education. People such as Cameron Fash, who disregard the struggles of Georgia's working and middle classes, are prime examples of why Georgia needs more funding for higher education, not less.
A better educated Georgia will mean better paying jobs for Georgians. No international corporation is going to look at a state slashing education left and right, be it secondary or higher education, and say "that's where I want to take my business."
We will continue losing job opportunities to those who value education more than us until we realize that the only solution to Georgia's long-term economic struggles are to invest in a world-class secondary and higher education system.
The Young Democrats of Georgia will continue to work with a broad coalition of everyday Georgians working to ensure the survival of our educational system, while the Chairman of the Georgia Young Republicans will wait out the struggle with Seth Harp and Don Balfour in Glenn Beck's Fear Chamber.
Education is under attack - stand up, fight back!

Today, students from all over Georgia, rallied together at the state capitol in Atlanta. Young Democrats of Georgia proudly partnered with Georgia Students for Public Higher Education (GSPHE) to organize the event.
Students speak out against budget cuts in education. Photo courtesy of Al Turnell.
Representatives DuBose Porter and Stephanie Stuckey Benfield and Senators Nan Orrock and Vincent Fort, along with the Democratic Party of Georgia, showed their support for young people and their concerns for how budget cuts would affect public higher education.
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, RJ Hadley, had this to say:
"As I have been saying throughout this campaign, everyone must get involved. Young and old, left and right, the challenges are too great to sit on the sidelines. I applaud the efforts of these students today and hope they will keep up the fight for education."
Gwinnett Tech student & active Young Democrat, Tyler Alley:
"I think it was just really awesome seeing how many students cared about their education and that they knew it wasn't right that our lives were essentially going to be cut if that bill goes through."
Students rally together, concerned with proposed budget cuts in public higher edcuation. Photo courtesy of RJ Hadley.

Rallying for Public Higher Education in the News!
After today's amazing rally at the Gold Dome, I wanted to take the chance to share some of the news coverage that Georgia Students for Public Higher Education (GSPHE) and Young Democrats of Georgia got!

WATCH THEM RUN!!!
Some people never knew that Georgia's legislators could run so fast, but when you lit up their e-mails, their mail boxes and their voice mails... boy, did we get to see them run for cover.
Why are they running? Because they're wrong, and they know they're wrong. They're doing everything they can to deflect the backlash from themselves... but it won't work... we're on to them and we're not letting up anytime soon!

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS?
The Georgia General Assembly, in all its wisdom, is considering allowing massive budgets cuts to Georgia's institutes of higher learning. They are seriously considering allowing a $300 MILLION DOLLAR CUT to the University System of Georgia on top of the cuts to the system last year.
This will end programs, this will result in the loss of jobs, this will result in more Georgians being unable to afford a college education.
YDG has again paired up with theater company Synchronicity for "Women + War." Each ticket costs just $25, and $7 of each ticket goes directly to YDG! This allows you to enjoy a thought-provoking night at the theater while supporting Young Democrats.
Women + War synopsis: "The women speak again. Our company-created hit from 2005 returns in new form. Synchronicity's Women + War is now a streamlined multimedia performance that explores the startling, hopeful, funny and heartbreaking nature of what it means to be a woman touched by war. Told through text, movement and striking visuals."
Letter from the Editor (Jen)Last night, I watched the most recent film adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's book, All The King's Men (2006) with Sean Penn, as the fictional, Willie Stark. Mr. Stark, a small town lawyer with great ideals, is running for governor of Lousiana. In one scene, he delivers a speech to people in rural areas and says,
Letter from the Editor (Jen) Like many of you, last Wednesday night, I sat and listened to President Barack Obama deliver his first State of the Union. Below are excerpts from his speech.
Letter from the Editor (Jen) Today we remember a man who had great hope and insightful vision to make a difference in the world around him. Beyond that, we remember a man who also took action.

He passed laws that cracked down on price-fixing and streamlined the U.S. court system. In his capacity as Southeast Regional Whip in the House leadership, he continues to work to ensure that meaningful health reform passes Congress.

24 Hours to Change the Catastrophic Plan
3 million young Americans need you right now.
Congress is about to pass major health care reform. This is great news. Unfortunately, the legislation being considered contains provisions for "catastrophic care" plans that create a doughnut hole where millions of Americans - including young people and low and moderate income people of all ages - will earn too much to qualify for adequate subsidies, but too little to afford quality insurance.
Over 3 million young Americans, maybe even you, making between 225%-325% of the federal poverty level will not be able to gain access to basic primary and emergency room care, because the proposed low cost, high deductible catastrophic plan is insurance in name only. Any catastrophic plan offered must include a "floor" for health plans requiring some basic coverage for primary care, an increase in transparency, and an adjustment to minimum deductibles set by the HHS Secretary.
We need you to take action to better the current health reform legislation in Congress. We know this has been a long fight, but we are closer than ever to a victory that would benefit millions of Americans.

This survey, along with providing a basis to update our YDG database, will help provide insight on how to make our communications between YDs (individuals, chapters, officers, etc.) better and more efficient.
It is very important to take part, and only takes a couple minutes if that. Note that at the end of the survey, there is a box for comments as well.
Many many thanks in advance for your participation.

Important: Please Read
Dear Friends,
A couple of months ago, the Executive Committee of the Young Democrats of Georgia asked me to serve as our Vice President of Finance. I care very deeply about the future of the Democratic Party in Georgia, so I agreed.
During my short time in this position, I have been faced with a very serious situation. The economy has been struggling, funds from the national organization have ceased and monthly donations are at an all time low.
Since then, our financial troubles have remained. You all know the reasons why all political organizations are struggling financially right now, so I won't remind you of them.
However; even with the economy, YDG still has monthly expenses that must be paid. YDG still has to pay the rent, keep the lights and the phone and internet working. And as much as our landlords like us, they can't give us these things for free.

An Invitation from Rep. John Lewis
Dear Friends,
On July 16, my colleagues and I on the House Ways & Means Committee marked up and passed major health care legislation that will help millions of Americans receive better, more affordable health care. In the coming weeks other committees both in the House and Senate will debate and hopefully pass similar legislation to develop a uniquely American health care system.

Young Dems of UGA Have Some Advice on Recruiting New Members
The following was written by Bobby Andres, the Political Director for the UGA YD's, who has been active in our outreach efforts. Thanks- Louis Elrod
FRESHMEN OUTREACH There are a number of factors that go into our current recruiting numbers. One factor is definitely the setting. The ability to set up a booth during freshmen orientation is incredibly helpful. There are 16 rounds of freshmen orientation, and at each one, the freshmen are sent to a Resource Fair, where several of the various colleges and organizations at the university are set up. Our booth consists of a simple display board, my laptop which runs a slideshow of pictures, a few Obama campaign signs, and our t-shirt from last year ("Now that's a nice piece of ..." with the picture of a donkey). This setting definitely helps with recruitment, given that we have access to, basically, the entire incoming class (at least if they pass by our booth). The table cost us $50 total for all the sessions, but we've already recouped that money and more by selling last year's leftover t-shirts to the freshmen.
"This is a fight that is primarily bi-partisan as well. The Georgia Young Democrats and the Georgia Young Republicans have been working together to get this passed. The loudest opposition to Sunday sales comes from the Christian Coalition because they believe it is an attack on the Christian Sabbath. And our current non-drinking Governor, Sonny Perdue, is against it as well. I don’t understand how this argument is still being validated by our State Representatives. Most Georgia counties allow alcohol sales by the glass in restaurants on Sunday, so what is the difference? If it’s the drinking and driving issue (as some claim it is), aren’t people more likely to stay home and drink if they buy their alcohol at the grocery store rather than a restaurant….yes! Isn't that obvious? You drink at a restaurant and then leave in your car, you're drinking and driving. You buy a six-pack at the grocery store, come home and cut your grass, now you're hot as the devil (because it is Georgia after all), pop open a beer and sit down in front of the TV to enjoy it...you're not driving at all."

"A lot of the money is going toward educating today’s students," Staub said. "This is a new career opportunity."

Academy Applications Closing Soon: Apply Now!
If you're a Young Democrat who is interested in someday running for office, helping another candidate run for office, being on a Board of Directors for a company or nonprofit agency, or you are just looking to beef-up your professional experience, you should apply for the 2009-2010 Young Democrats of Georgia Leadership Academy. Through this Academy, you will engage in a variety of activities and collaborative projects designed to teach and grow the skills you need to be a Democratic professional.
"Democrats, somewhat unsurprisingly, have the largest partisan ID advantage among Gen Y'ers, followed by among Baby Boomers. Republicans do relatively well (although are still at a net disadvantage) among Generation X'ers. What's interesting, though, is what happens when we look at not these abstract generational categories, but rather at the following question: who was President when you turned 18? As annotated in the chart below, the popularity -- or lack thereof -- of the President when the voter turned 18 would seem to have a lot of explanatory power for how their politics turned out later on:"

A Call for Nominations
Fellow Young Democrats -
Thank you for a wonderful convention at Unicoi State Park, and the confidence you placed in me to lead you the next two years. It is now time to organize ourselves for the work ahead. YDG is a place where young people not only learn to love politics and advance our issues, but it serves as a training ground for future leaders of the party and nation. There are many appointments that I am charged to make under our Charter and By-Laws. Through May 10, I will be accepting applications for various appointments within YDG. I want people who are interested and motivated to work, learn, and have fun along the way.
To that end, if you are interested in an appointed position, please email me at president@georgiayds.org with your name, address, phone, email and the position (or positions) you are interested in. You may apply for more than one position in your application. For EACH POSITION, please write a paragraph telling me why you are interested in that position and what you envision doing with it if you are appointed. This way, you just give me your name, etc once while each position you have an interest in will have its own paragraph. For committees, only the Chair is a member of the YDG Executive Committee, but to do the work of the committee, the Vice Chair and Secretary are important. Please let me know if you want to ONLY be considered for chair, or if you'd be willing to serve in a vice chair or secretary capacity.
Below are descriptions of the various positions and committees.

This is important even if you or your chapter is not attending convention! To remain an officially recognized chapter, we must have received credentials from your chapter! If you don't have a chapter, you can submit yourself as an At-Large member through the Credentials page of our 2009 Convention link at www.georgiayds.org.
