In 2009 and 2010 Young Democrats of Georgia will be working to engage our members in working on Issues at the state level. Our members take action by emailing, calling and showing up in person to talk to their State Representatives and Senators at the State Capitol about a variety of Issues. Here are some of the areas we are working for 2009 and 2010
Transportation & Environment
YDG has consistenly lobbies alongside our friends to protect and preserve our natural resources and promote the use greenspace and greenbuild initiatives. In 2009, we lobbied heavily for increased funding and revenue for MARTA and a comprehensive state transportation plan.
In 2010, we will continue to push for commute-alternatives, protection of greenspace, and initiatives for clean water and clean air.
Sunday Alcohol Sales
Partnering with our Republican Counterparts, Young Democrats successfully lobbied and supported a bill to allow local cities and counties the option to approve a Sunday Sales on Alcohol Bill. At the last minute the bill was pulled by Senate Leadership who feared a showdown over the bill. While our state continues to dwell in lost revenue, YDG is working to support a re-introduced Sunday Sales bill in 2010.
This past year we came very close to getting this legislation on the floor for a vote. Unfortunately, election politics were once again permitted to trample the platforms of both the Republican and Democratic parties. It is now obvious that if we want to have our right to decide locally for retail sales of alcohol on Sunday, we will have to build enough public support to drown out the voice of the religious opposition. That is where you come in. I need your help and your friends help. Sign the online petitions, join me on Facebook and donate what you can spare to help us launch the new publicity campaign so we can continue to push this legislation!
